The neighborhood

Lake days & river floats

Hillside Hacienda sits in a quiet neighborhood in Canyon Lake, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country in Comal County.

  • Canyon Lake

Swim, fish, boat or paddle. Guests get free lake access at boat ramp 7.

  • Right in the neighborhood

A neighborhood park and ball courts for the kids (and the competitive adults).

  • Float the Comal River

Tubing on the Comal in New Braunfels is not far, a Texas summer classic.

  • Historic Gruene

Live music, shops and restaurants in Gruene make for an easy day trip.

Local guide

Things to do around Canyon Lake

Our favorite ways to spend a Hill Country day, from the lake and the river to the caverns and old Gruene.

On the lake

  • Boat ramp 7

Our guests’ free lake access. It’s a Comal County ramp for launching and loading boats only, and it closes when the lake is low.

  • Canyon Lake Marina

Rent a tritoon or a double-decker with a water slide for the day.

  • Cranes Mill Marina

Its sister marina near Cranes Mill Park, where the Guadalupe flows into the lake, with online boat rental booking.

  • Comal Park & Canyon Park

Lakefront parks run by WORD, with swim beaches and picnic sites. Comal Park is on the south shore near Startzville. Seasonal: March–October

On the river

  • Tube Haus

A Canyon Lake outfitter on FM 306 for floating the Guadalupe’s Horseshoe Loop below the dam.

  • River Sports Tubes

Tube rentals in the middle of the Horseshoe Loop, with short, medium and long floats.

  • Rockin’ R River Rides

A Gruene outfitter for floats on the Guadalupe and the Comal.

  • Guadalupe River State Park

Four miles of river frontage for swimming and tubing, plus hiking trails. The park often fills up, so reserve a day pass ahead.

River flow changes with releases from the dam, so call your outfitter before you go. Floating is busiest in summer. More outfitters: WORD’s river outfitter list.

Hike & explore

  • Canyon Lake Gorge

GBRA guided tours of a gorge carved by the 2002 flood, with fossils, dinosaur tracks and waterfalls. Book ahead.

  • Natural Bridge Caverns

Guided walking tours through underground caverns, plus outdoor attractions above ground.

  • Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

A drive-through safari park where you see the animals from your car.
